After the geometry was cut and fully welded, I zapped a pipe on the piece and headed to the blacksmith shop. Once the forge was raging hot, I heated the metal form till red hot, stuck the nozzle of the compressor onto the end of the pipe and strategically blow it up with air.

Since the metal I use to make these works is so thin, typically 20-30g depending on the form I want, I have to take extra care in how it is welded, balancing the heat of the steel and the pressure of the air as to not blow the seams or melt the piece entirely into the forge.

Thankfully I didn’t lose any of them. All the pieces worked out and as things do, got better with each try.

Been riding a bicycle across Germany the past week

Been riding a bicycle across Germany the past weeks, south to north, headed to Berlin.

After the residency last month, I traveled to stay with friends in Tübingen @jurgenklugmann and bought this trusty €200 used bike (which came with a fabulous @brooksengland knockoff leather seat!), the cheapest saddlebags I could find, a few extras to make my bike German-legal, packed up and set out.

There is an extensive network of bicycle routes in Germany, it’s quite impressive and makes for easy travel. It’s been on my mind for a while now to start taking more long distance bicycle trips. Before I came to Germany I had plans to bring those thoughts out of my mind and into reality. And I’ve gone and done it!

The weeks have been full of visits with wonderful friends @carla_chlebarov @jurgenklugmann @rothmaierbeate @annina.sp @alice.buenonatto , staying in castles, seeing many museums, listening to lots of good music, green fields, lush forests, plenty of radlers and lots of riding. Some rain here and there meant putting the equally extensive rail network to use. It’s been a wonderful journey on two-wheels.

Should arrive in Berlin in a week or so.
Excited to get back there after so many years.

In order to properly construct a Platonic solid all parts be identical. I didn’t have a cnc at the residency to make these perfect shapes, I cut and ground each by hand. It took quite a while but the time spent being precise with the parts was made up with the ease of assembly when it came time to weld them together.

The Platonic Solids. Tetrahedron, Hexahedron, Octa

The Platonic Solids.
Tetrahedron, Hexahedron, Octahedron, Icosahedron, and Dodecahedron.
I began with the most basic of geometries.

They are defined as a convex polyhedron whose vertices and faces are all identical, regular polygons meeting at the same three-dimensional angles. These are the only convex regular polyhedra that exist. Named after the Greek philosopher Plato, he believed these geometries to be the most basic building blocks of reality. Connecting them to the states of matter, our classical elements and the cosmos. From micro to macro, inside and out.

Studied by countless philosophers, theologists, mathematicians, astronomers and scientists it is agreed that these shapes hold a unique importance. And the signs of their significance show up in countless places; the VESPR theory of molecular structure, the golden ratio, within the semiotics of all major spiritual traditions. They are what some call the fundamentals of Sacred Geometry for their profound relationship to how reality is shaped and the symmetry they have with life and the structures of energy.

I felt it appropriate to make these my first blown metal study.

I went to @salemartworks with two main goals.
To blow metal and to blow glass into metal.
Since saw has a blacksmith, metalshop and hotshop on site it was uniquely capable of facilitating these goals.

Years ago, when I worked at a blacksmith shop, I successfully blew metal in a forge. I welded together some geometric shapes with a pipe on the end, heated the form in the coal forge and used pressed air to blow the red hot steel like you would a balloon. They turned out great, then I left the job and had been thinking about them and the iterations I wanted to explore with the process. Such as cutting voids into the shapes and blowing glass into the blown metal form.

I was finally able to do this at saw and I even made a series of them. And at the residency this summer in Germany, I made even more!

I made a lot of work while at @salemartworks last

I made a lot of work while at @salemartworks last year, 56 pieces in total. With the exception of a few, most of the sculptures could fit in your hands, which was a goal of mine, making more works that are accessible and hopefully, the ultimate goal….sellable, since I seem to be so bad at that part. The stack of drawings and paintings overflowed. It felt great.

Not only did I get the chance to make all this artwork but I also did a photojournalist series while there. I interviewed and photographed the 16 resident artists visiting from Germany as part of the salem2salem artist exchange program. The same program I was invited to this year!

This was as rewarding as the art making for me and gave me the opportunity to hear the stories of these talented artists and use my writing and photography in a different way. I really enjoyed the process and made many friends from it.

As I post about the artwork I made at saw over the next weeks, I will be peppering in the photojournalism work I did of the s2s artists as I go.

One year ago today was my last post from my residency at @salemartworks and now I find myself in Germany taking part in the residency at Lake Constance with many of the same Germany artists I met last year in New York!

Since I never did share with you my experience there last year and since I’m feeling quite nostalgic of it all considering the company, I will go back and tell the story of my time at SAW. Then I will share the new work I am doing here in Germany.

Hello everyone!
A lot of time has passed since I was last here.
There have been some deep ups and downs.

To all those I did not see or reach out to or write back, I apologize.
I have only had a short bandwidth of energy to expend outside of myself this year as I dealt with the many lows that came my way, thank you for understanding.

I am going to approach this platform from a new perspective, attempting to keep a line open, do some sharing, while preserving the quiet I have enjoyed so much being away from social media and my devices this year.

There was a time when this platform meant alot to me but just as all things do, that has changed. Maybe I expected too much of it or perhaps it has just become something that feels insincere or… it is I who has changed. I will own what I can and say that the last one is a solid truth.

As vacant as I feel this platform has become, I do understand that it has a function for connection and outreach in the world. It falls short for my writing, as scroll culture doesn’t support reading even the 2200 characters I typically write. So the search for a new space for that continues.

For now, I will write and share as feels good and with that I'll be able to show you the artwork I have been making, some of the places I am adventuring and the lovely people I get to surround myself with.

So much love and gratitude for all my friends and family who helped me through this year! 🩷🌞✨

I have been trying to post the new artwork I did a

I have been trying to post the new artwork I did at the residency this past fall but life has made that difficult. From helping with my Grandmother's end of life care, watching her slowly pass away before me, to a painful confrontation within my divided family and of course, the crowning news of the results of a genetic test showing that I am positive for a very serious and rare cancer gene mutation.

With the unfortunate news of this mutation I now am faced with a series of terribly difficult, life and body altering decisions that I must make to keep myself alive. I guess it's good I can say I didn't do this one to myself, I can't blame it on a bad decision or selfish impulse, I can't say I’ll do better next time or that it was simply an accident. This one is different from the rest of my pitfalls these past years. It carries no blame or regret, just an unlucky draw. Perhaps this is what life was preparing me for through the struggle of these years.

I have found a few points of light these past months. In an effort to lessen the pain I carry each day from my injuries, I devoted myself to a strict and rigorous exercise and eating routine. I worked out for up to two hours each day, went to physical therapy 3 times a week, saw my orthopedic doctors regularly, fasted everyday and ate healthier than I ever have in my entire life.

And what do you know, my pain decreased significantly for the first time in three years. I am no longer in a location where I can see my doctors but I am still continuing this routine as best I can. This is a light I am holding onto in this new shade of black I find myself in. I will hold it high to illuminate my way as I move forward into the unknown of this year and the trails that await me there. Letting it stand as a reminder of all I have, can and will overcome.

Stoking many fires!

Been focused on my art @salemartworks these past two weeks. Feels good to just block out all the noise and let my hands do the talking. I can’t wait to show you all the new body of work I’m making!

Some of the seeds budding are ideas that I planted many years ago. So much time has past since their conception and to see them coming to life is a bit surreal.

Getting to play with all types of new techniques and materials, thinking about form and composition from all new perspectives.

And of course… lots of fire!

For the next two months I will live in this tiny house and make art in all of the facilities in these photos @salemartworks

This wonderland is called Salem Art Works or SAW. It is an arts center, sculpture park and artist community located in the beautiful rolling countryside of Upstate NY in the small town of Salem. SAW invites local, national and international artists of all kinds to come live and work at their facilities with a variety of residences and art exchanges happening throughout the year.

I was invited to their Studio Artist residency which will allow me to use all of their vast array of facilities and equipment. They have glassblowing, welding, blacksmithing, lampworking, casting, foundry, ceramics, woodshop, print shop, painting and more…. I know, it's insane.

Also as a studio artist I will be giving back to the community through teaching and assisting other students and artists as needed. There is no proper way to express how excited I am about this adventure! But if you know me at all, I'm sure you can understand why I am over the moon right now.

There is an amazing community of artists here in residence with me and also some long term folks and staff. Already I have connected so much with them! During my time here I will be able to share knowledge, critiques, collaborations and of course we gather for family lunch and dinner every night. Good thing I got all that group cooking experience at @vegacommunityhonduras !

Feeling SUPER blessed and SUPER inspired.
I have arrived right where I am supposed to be and it feels incredible.
